Moët Hennessy - Louis Vuitton “LVMH” is
the world’s leading luxury products group with net sales of
€12.69 billion in 2002. LVMH comprises 5 business groups and
approximately 44 subsidiaries across the wines and spirits,
fashion and leather goods, perfumes and cosmetics, watches and
jewellery and selective retailing sectors.
The diversity of the business groups
necessitated a sophisticated HCM system. PeopleSoft HCM 5.5 was
selected and implemented in 1996 and upgraded in 1999 to 7.5.
Congruent were selected as PeopleSoft
integrators for LVMH in 2000 and together we achieved a
successful upgrade of the HCM system from V7.5 to V7.51. The
upgrade project was achieved under budget and 5 man days early.

In 2001 LVMH determined that an early
adoption of PeopleSoft 8 HCM was required to leverage new web
functionality and increase availability to their dynamic and
growing company portfolio. Following the successful upgrade
in 2000, Congruent were requested to perform the upgrade from
V7.51 to V8.1.
A joint decision was made early in the
project to adopt a novel approach which would best satisfy the
LVMH requirements for the re-deployment of HCM and the removal
of redundant customisation. This methodology determined that
rather than upgrade, re-implementation including limited
customisations and a data migration would provide PeopleSoft 8
HCM in the shortest time frame and with minimal cost and
disruption.
Congruent worked closely with LVMH to
identify areas of enhancement to their system that were to be
retained and that were not provided by V8. A vanilla environment
was created and the enhancements re-applied. This resulted in a
clean, empty, LVMH implementation of PeopleSoft 8.1 HCM.
In parallel with the enhancement of the
vanilla system, the data migration from 7.51 to 8.1 was planned
by using an innovative methodology. A script was created to
retrieve data from the 7.51 database straight in 8.1 tables
after customisation, meaning that no rebuild was applied.
The completed 8.1 implementation, together
with a snapshot of the data was passed to LVMH personnel for
testing, verification and sign-off and LVMH then selected a date
most appropriate to their business for going live with
PeopleSoft.
Congruent re-applied their data migration
scripts to an empty copy of the LVMH database, the client
workstations were automatically re-configured by the LVMH team,
with the end result being a switch from 7.51 to 8 with just a
few hours down-time.
The successful project was achieved by
Congruent and LVMH working as a close team in just 12 man weeks.
