What do you consider to be your main area of expertise?
If we are talking PeopleTools, it would have to be using Component
Interfaces for data conversion. I developed this technique for data conversion
when I was involved in one of the first implementations of PeopleSoft 8 HRMS in the
UK at P&O. I've never used an SQR for data conversion since.
What project have you most enjoyed working on and why?
It would have to be the HRMS 8 implementation at Egg. As with many projects of this size,
we had our problems, but the team I worked with were excellent. We worked exceptionally
long hours and worked very closely with the customer to overcome the issues and ensure the
project was a success. There was a fantastic team spirit.
What would you most like added to the PeopleSoft product?
I've always found the Visual Basic prompt that provides information about functions
as you type very useful. Something similar to this in the PeopleCode Editor would
be a great time saver.
What is the most frustrating thing about the PeopleSoft product?
Just when you think you have a got a grip of all the technology, PeopleSoft bring
out a new release and you've got to start learning all over again. Mind you, if we
kept the same car all the time, it would be boring. It's always nice to have some
new gadgets to play with.
What advice would you give to a new client starting with PeopleSoft?
Start with a good team of both technical and functional experts. PeopleSoft is a huge
product and it can be easy to start off heading in the wrong direction. If you have a
team of people who have a proven track record in successful PeopleSoft implementations,
you'll have a much better chance of a successful project.
What originally drew you to consulting or the computing field?
Pure luck really, the course I wanted to do at university was full. I got offered
a place on Computer & Comms course instead, I decided to take it.
Why did you join Congruent?
I joined Congruent because of the people there. They are open and
friendly and have a work hard, play hard attitude with the will to succeed in
what they are doing. They're the kind of people I want to work with.
Where do you want to be in 5 years time?
Somewhere warm, playing more golf. So I will be transferring to the Marbella office as soon as it opens.
