What would you see is your prime area of expertise?
Definitely my singing even if it is not fully appreciated by all the consultants.
We do like a good singalong to Busted when they’re on the radio.
That aside, I quite like numbers strange as it may seem. I really like being
able to see all the figures come together at the end of the year, when you have
a double check of your day to day work like this it’s very satisfying.
What originally drew you to working in the consulting or the computing industry?
I haven’t worked in the computer or consulting industry before and thought it
would allow me to broaden my accounting skills further, particularly given that
my previous role was in the production industry where the future is not quite so
bright. Previously I had worked for a global company that manufactured contact
lenses, it was a large company and although I had a varied role, it was very much
a daily battle to get information that I required from a variety of managers who
always seemed to be in meetings.
Why did you join Congruent?
When I read about how the company operated on a very personal scale, and how well
the employees were catered for it immediately struck me how much it fitted in to
what I wanted in an employer. When I was being recruited, I had a look through the
website and it reinforced this idea with details of fun events that have been
arranged. The very small management structure and relaxed atmosphere were the
icing on the cake.
How is working for Congruent different to working for previous employers?
Congruent is far more personal than any company I have ever worked for. A lot of
thought and hard work goes into making the working environment as stress free as
possible. The openness that is positively encouraged to air any suggestions,
opinions or indeed any grievances puts a stop to any bad feelings that could
cause tensions in the work place. When any decision is to be made everyone is
asked to contribute, and strangely enough we are actually listened to! Except
if we’re singing along to Busted when everyone tries NOT to listen.
Where do you want to be in 5 years time?
On a beach in Barbados with Hugh Grant, however, failing that I am an odd person
and actually enjoy accountancy. I will be very happy to be working with Congruent
but to have expanded my role to include more of the management accounting as well
as the day to day stuff.
